The Work..
This project founded by Khalil places the wellbeing of bees above the pursuit of the sweet honey. Its purpose is to support, educate and raise awareness about the essential role that pollinators play in sustaining our environment.
The population of bees is in decline, and they are the largest population of pollinators. 70% of our crops are directly influenced by these pollinators. By keeping bees at home in the garden, individuals can help increase pollinator populations, improve the health of gardens and surrounding wildlife.
The project also encourages a deeper understanding of where our food comes from, to understand the effectiveness and what to look for in food as well as identifying truths about them. By understanding this, the understanding and exploitation of adulterated honey around the world needs to be changed. If beehives become a very common garden feature, small quantities of honey can be respectfully harvested to reduce the mass consumption.
In year one Khalil’s first fundraise completely sold out within an hour and the proceeds were donated all to Oxfam. The moment winter was over, the bees came back out as well as a drive to build momentum on this leisurely hobby to help the bees as well as people.
The small quantities of honey that is collected is all hard work from the bees, so collecting honey is only minimal and sales of honey is very limited.
The science of honey is so over romanticized that it has caused exploitation by honey sellers of real understanding of what honey’s properties are, the effects and application suitable. As a qualified pharmacist, Khalil is well rehearsed in showing evidence based facts to readdress and debunk many of the ideas floating around that have conflated people including the sellers and beekeepers themselves.
Providing education, increasing the population and welfare of bees and pollinators as well as raising awareness of environmental and conflict topics are the roots of this project.
Save the planet, save the bees.
